Emotional Regulation: The Most Underrated Performance Superpower– and your biggest competitive edge

I say this with love… but having what I call an adult temper tantrum is not cute. It’s a bit cringe 😬

What is an adult temper tantrum you may ask?

  • Yelling at your coach

  • Complaining on every changeover

  • Throwing or breaking your racket or a ball

  • Basically: whining, spiraling, freaking out when something goes wrong.

It’s giving 3-year old energy 😅 And it’s making you look weak and fragile on court. We all see it. Your opponent sees it. The crowd sees it. When you explode like that, you’re literally giving your power away.

Do you really want your opponent to KNOW you’re freaking out? Do you want them to know how fragile you are? Because I promise you they can feel it. Your doubt. Your frustration. Your emotional leakage. It’s all energy– and they will use it to their advantage.

Think of poker… would you win by showing your entire emotional hand on your face? Exactly. “Poker face” exists for a reason. It’s power. It’s control. It’s energy contained instead of spilled.

So instead of revealing your card hand every time something goes wrong, here’s what the best athletes and performers do: they take that energy and channel it forward. They use it as fuel– not a signal of collapse. Because giving it away is predictable. Boring. Easy to beat. 🥱

As a high performer, emotional regulation truly IS your superpower. But here’s the twist:

You need to free your emotions OFF court so you can be fully in control of them ON court.

(I’m a huge fan of letting emotions out – that’s the point of living. To feel our emotions. To feel our human experience–if you don’t feel your true emotions, they stay trapped inside your body and make you sick).

Your body is a pressure cooker. If you don’t release your fear, frustration, anger, doubt, and anxiety in your regular life… guess what bursts out at 5-all in the third? 👀

The thing you’ve been avoiding.

When you actually feel your emotions off court — digest them, move them, process them — you clear your subconscious operating system (your subconscious operating system controls 95% of who you are). And then, under pressure, you respond intentionally instead of reacting unconsciously. You released your pressure cooker off court to stay in control on court.

That’s the real work. And it’s why emotional release + regulation is an actual skill set of elite performers.

Before you build unshakeable self-belief or confidence, you MUST first clear the stuck, old emotions you’ve been carrying.

On-Court Practical Tips 🎾

Scenario 1: The emotional spike hits. Take that emotion (energy in motion) and channel it into ONE part of your body — your hand is ideal. Put all of that emotion there: put all that frustration or fear into your hand. Squeeze it. Feel it intensely for 30–60 seconds. Then release it — shake it out. Let it go.

Scenario 2: You want to transmute the emotion. Feel that emotion building… Lean into it. Don’t give it away so easily. Use it as fuel — gas in your tank, that spark in your engine. Instead of releasing it in a tantrum, release it in your next shot. Build momentum. Let it elevate your precision, intensity, and presence. That calm, grounded, cool-as-a-cucumber energy? That’s intimidating. That’s powerful. That’s mindset mastery.

And THAT is your true competitive edge.
